Kairouan, Douz, & El Djem 2-Day Tour

Tour Details 

Day 1: Sousse - El Djem - Matmata - Douz

The tour begins with hotel pickup in Sousse. Once ready, we'll leave the sparkling Mediterranean coast behind and head into the heart of Tunisia.

After about 1 hour,  our first stop is the El Djem Amphitheatre, one of the best-preserved Roman Coliseums in the world. We'll discover its grandstands, which could hold 35,000 spectators, and imagine the thrilling spectacles of gladiators and wild beasts.

Next, we’ll travel to Matmata, a lunar-like landscape dotted with craters, where Berbers carved underground homes to protect themselves from extreme temperatures.

We’ll visit one of these troglodyte homes and the famous Sidi Idriss Hotel, the filming location for one of the Star Wars movies. Lunch will be served at the hotel’s restaurant.

After lunch, we’ll continue for about 1 hour and 20 minutes to Douz, the gateway to the Sahara. Upon arrival, we’ll settle into a desert camp. You can enjoy the sunset or take an optional camel ride, experiencing the slow pace of ancient desert caravans.

The day will end with a Bedouin dinner around a campfire, accompanied by music and the magic of the starlit sky, before retiring to your tent for the night.

Day 2: Douz - Chott El Djerid - Chebika - Kairouan - Sousse

After an early breakfast, we’ll set off for Chott El Djerid, Tunisia’s largest salt lake. There, the mirages of the largest salt lake in the Maghreb, and its pink surface, will offer us unforgettable views.

Afterwards, visit the lush Chebika Oasis, a former Roman refuge now filled with palm trees and cascading water—a true desert miracle. We’ll enjoy about 1 hour of hiking through this enchanting landscape.

After lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll continue to Kairouan, a city founded in 670 AD and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We'll be able to visit the monumental Great Mosque, with its marble courtyard and impressive columns, and stroll through the city’s charming streets.

Finally, we’ll return to Sousse, arriving at your hotel around 5:30 pm.

Accommodation Info 

This tour includes 1 night in a desert camp in Douz. The tents have electricity for charging devices and a shared bathroom block with toilets and showers.

Under no circumstances will you have to share the tents with strangers. Options include single, double, triple, and family tents. Single bookings incur a supplement. Children aged 1 to 12 must share a room with their parents or guardians on a rollaway bed.

Meal Plan

• Day 1 Lunch: Brik (fried pastry filled with meat, tuna, or vegetables with spices), couscous, salad, and seasonal fruit.
• Day 1 Dinner: Brik, meat cooked in a traditional gargoulette, salad, and seasonal fruit.
• Day 2 Breakfast: Eggs, dates, butter, jam, cheese, sand-baked bread, milk, coffee, and juice.
• Day 2 Lunch: Chicken or turkey escalope, salad, and seasonal fruit.

Vegetarian options are available. Drinks are not included and must be purchased separately.

New Year's Eve in the Sahara Desert

On December 31st, we'll celebrate the New Year in a magical desert setting. The evening begins with a show of knights and camels, evoking the legendary caravan routes.

We’ll enjoy a cocktail under the stars, followed by a special New Year’s Eve dinner inspired by Berber cuisine. Traditional music and a DJ will keep the party going, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display lighting up the desert sands to welcome 2026.
