Tokyo Traditional Tea Ceremony
Activity Details
After meeting in front of the Asakusa Tourist and Cultural Information Center, we'll walk to the venue where the tea ceremony will take place: a traditional Japanese room set up for the practice of chanoyu, or the way of tea. We'll learn about this ritual art form in which the preparation of matcha goes far beyond the culinary, becoming an aesthetic discipline in its own right.
First, we'll prepare to enter the room, where we'll be guided through the basic protocol for the activity. Once seated, a detailed explanation of the ceremony's meaning, ingredients, and main utensils will begin.
We'll get to know matcha, a finely ground green tea, and learn about the traditional pieces involved: the chawan (bowl), the chasen (bamboo whisk), and the chashaku, the small scoop used to measure the tea powder.
Over the 40 minutes of the ceremony, we'll follow the preparation process step by step. We'll first observe how the tea leaf is transformed into powder.
We'll then prepare our own matcha under expert supervision, learning the correct whisking technique to achieve a smooth emulsion and a light foam on the surface.
Finally, we'll enjoy our tea alongside Japanese sweets, subject to availability.
