Túnez, Cartago, & Sidi Bou Said Day Trip
Day Trip Details
At the indicated time, we’ll pick you up from your hotel in Tunis to begin a journey to Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. Here we go!
During the approximately 30-minute drive, we’ll provide context about the area until we reach Carthage, one of the great powers of Antiquity. We’ll explore its archaeological sites, including the Baths of Antoninus, the ancient Punic ports, and the remains of Roman villas, as we mentally reconstruct a city that was once a direct rival of Rome.
After 1 hour of sightseeing, we’ll continue to Sidi Bou Said, perched on a cliff overlooking the Gulf of Tunis. Here, the architecture reflects a carefully preserved identity. Its whitewashed houses, blue shutters, Andalusian-inspired arches, and doors decorated with geometric nails are unique in the region. We’ll walk for 2 hours along its cobbled streets, understanding how this former artists’ refuge became a symbol of Tunisian refinement.
To recharge our energy, we’ll head to a restaurant in the medina where we’ll enjoy a lunch consisting of rice, meat, salad, and potatoes. After this 1-hour break, we’ll enter the beating heart of the country, the medina of Tunis, a World Heritage Site. We’ll spend approximately 2 hours exploring a medieval maze of souks, madrasas, and mosques.
During this walk, we’ll understand how each dynasty, the Aghlabids, Fatimids, and Ottomans, left its mark on palaces, fountains, and mausoleums. The medina wasn’t conceived as a simple collection of streets, but as a city organized around the Great Mosque of Zitouna, a religious, political, and educational epicenter.
Finally, we’ll return to your hotel and say our goodbyes after a total of 10 hours.
