La mejor época para viajar a Vietnam es durante los meses de marzo a mayo y de septiembre a noviembre. Ofrecen temperaturas agradables y menos lluvias que el resto del año. Hay que entender que el país tiene clima tropical, así que hay zonas con monzones en verano y otras más secas en invierno. Conviene planificar el viaje según la ruta.
Este país es famoso por su artesanía por lo que es muy habitual acudir a sus mercados para comprar objetos de lo más variados, desde cestas de bambú hasta teteras de cerámica o pulseras de jade. Las prendas de ropa de seda, como pañuelos, o los sombreros cónicos tradicionales (nón lá) son también muy codiciados entre los turistas. Asimismo, recomendamos adquirir café vietnamita, ya que su sabor es exquisito. Los precios de todos estos productos son generalmente bastante asequibles, aunque es habitual regatear las tarifas, una experiencia muy arraigada en la cultura local.
Vietnam es un país bastante seguro para turistas. Las tasas de criminalidad son bajas y la gente local es hospitalaria. Aun así, hay que tener precaución en zonas muy turísticas ante la posibilidad de pequeños hurtos. Por otra parte, dado que el tráfico suele ser algo caótico, conviene vigilar el movimiento de los vehículos antes de cruzar en calles de grandes ciudades. En cualquier caso, se aconseja viajar con seguro médico por precaución.
La moneda oficial es el dong vietnamita. Los billetes tienen cifras altas, pero el coste de vida es bajo, por lo que las compras resultan bastante económicas. Las tarjetas se aceptan en la mayoría de hoteles y restaurantes turísticos, pero es mejor llevar efectivo para pagos en comercios pequeños o zonas rurales. Se puede cambiar dinero en bancos, casas de cambio o, directamente, obtener efectivo en cajeros.
Vietnam está en el huso horario GMT+7 y no realiza el cambio de hora estacional. Esto significa que hay 5 horas más que en la España peninsular durante el invierno, y 6 horas más cuando España aplica el horario de verano.
