Warsaw Cold War Free Tour
Tour Details
At the scheduled time, we’ll meet at Plac Konstytucji, a square that provides the perfect backdrop for an introduction to postwar Warsaw. Let’s begin the Cold War free tour!
At our meeting point, we’ll take in the buildings surrounding the square and admire Soviet-era frescoes. We’ll also tell you the astonishing story of Poland’s most famous counterintelligence operation, including secret police tactics and psychological warfare.
Next, we’ll stop outside Café Niespodzianka, where we’ll explain how grassroots organization gave rise to the powerful Solidarity movement in everyday places like this café, a symbol of peaceful rebellion.
We’ll then look at the exterior of the Ministry of Agriculture, noted for its brutalist architecture, and the Writers’ House. Here, we’ll talk about key figures such as Zbigniew Herbert and the moral dilemmas faced by intellectuals at the time. You’ll see how poetry and essays played a role in resisting censorship.
After that, we’ll stop at a commemorative plaque to honor fallen soldiers near the Palace of Culture and Science and then head to the Monument to Freedom of Expression. You’ll learn how banned ideas circulated through Warsaw, shaping public consciousness.
Finally, we’ll stop at the former Communist Party Headquarters near Charles de Gaulle Roundabout, where we’ll say goodbye after 1 hour and 45 minutes of touring.
