Considered to be one of the highest achievements of Colombian architecture, the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is a world-famous tourist destination and place of pilgrimage.

History

A place of worship was built in the salt mines of Zipaquirá in the 1950s so that mine workers had a place to pray. However, due to safety reasons, this initial construction was closed, and replaced by a new temple 60 metres (195 ft) below it.

Why visit the Salt Cathedral?

About an hour outside of Bogotá, this incredible converted salt mine consists of 14 small chapels, representing stations of the cross. Delving into this architectural masterpiece 200 metres (over 650 ft) underground is a truly special experience.

How to get there

The most common way to visit the Salt Cathedral is on a day trip from Bogotá. Alternatively, you can purchase a ticket online, and visit the mines via public/private transport.
