Experience Oaxaca’s Day of the Dead in Etla on November 1. Witness La Muerteada, a night procession filled with masks, music, and tradition like a local!

Activity Details

At the appointed time, we'll meet in front of the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de La Merced, right in the center of Oaxaca. From there, we will depart for San Agustín Etla, just one hour from the city. This charming town is famous for hosting La Muerteada, one of the most iconic Day of the Dead celebrations. Are you ready for an unforgettable night?

Upon arrival in Etla, we'll begin with a traditional Day of the Dead dinner, consisting of hot chocolate, pan de muerto (bread of the dead), and tamales typical of the region. This feast is served in a festive and welcoming atmosphere that will immerse you in the spirit of the celebration. A true delight for the palate!

Afterward, we'll take to the streets to immerse ourselves in the parade. More than 30 characters, such as priests, spiritualists, doctors, and devils, walk through the town dressed in traditional clothing and masks. Each, humorously and symbolically, representing the return of a deceased person to the world of the living and their struggle to achieve eternal rest. Each scene is brought to life by live music, which sets the pace for this theatrical procession. A show full of excitement and creativity!

La Muerteada is not just a celebration, but a living expression of Oaxacan identity. Throughout the tour, you'll feel how the entire community comes together in this collective representation, where death ceases to be the end and becomes transition, memory, and celebration. Did you know that this tradition has been celebrated in Etla for more than 80 years?

Finally, we'll return to Oaxaca and drop you off at your hotel, where we'll say goodbye after 5 hours of shared culture, tradition, and joy.
