Hacienda Doka Coffee Tour
Tour Details
In the mood for a great cup of Costa Rican coffee? Then we’ll meet at the entrance of Hacienda Doka, located at the foot of Poás Volcano, where the coffee grows with real character. After a brief introduction, we’ll begin our visit to one of the most important coffee plantations in Costa Rica.
To kick things off, you’ll be welcomed with a coffee cocktail before we start walking through the seedbeds, learning why Costa Rica has legally cultivated 100% Arabica coffee since 1989. We’ll then continue through the plantation as we discover the full life cycle of coffee, from germination and nursery stages to transplanting and the selective harvest. Along the way, we’ll talk about the altitude of these volcanic soils and the local microclimates that play a key role in how the coffee cherries ripen.
Next, we’ll visit the beneficio, the traditional coffee processing mill, a process recognized as National Heritage. Here we’ll see the pulping machines in action and learn about controlled fermentation, washing, and drying methods, whether under the sun or in mechanical dryers.
The tour will continue at the roasting plant, where different roast profiles are developed: light roasts to highlight floral notes, medium roasts for balance, and dark roasts for fuller, richer body. It’s a perfect blend of science and craftsmanship.
One of the highlights of the tour comes at the end, when we’ll enjoy an unlimited tasting of freshly brewed coffee. You’ll learn how to properly taste it, identifying fragrance, aroma, acidity, body, and aftertaste in every sip.
We’ll also stop by the butterfly garden, a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that surrounds this region. Finally, we’ll visit the shop to see another coffee roasting process and sample some delicious chocolate.
After about 1 hour, we’ll wrap up the visit and bring the experience to an end.
