Avignon Guided Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at Place Crillon, number 16, to begin our walking tour of Avignon, the old city of the Popes. From here, we'll go in search of the walls to admire one of the most iconic views of France, the Pont d'Avignon stretching over the Rhône. Did you know the original bridge had 22 arches, and today only 4 remain?
We'll cross the Porte de l’Oulle to admire the elegance of the Hôtel d’Europe and the Neoclassical facade of the Ancienne Comédie d'Aviñón, the Italian-style theater. We'll walk along the Rue Joseph Vernet, where we'll discover the house where Napoleon Bonaparte lived in 1793, before stopping in front of the imposing Chapelle de l’Oratoire and the Église Saint-Agricol, one of the oldest churches in the city.
Among Roman ruins and streets filled with history, we'll reach the lively Place de l’Horloge, the heart of local life, flanked by the City Hall and the Opera. From here, we'll head to the Place du Palais, where the Palais des Papes, one of the largest Gothic residences in the world, will make us travel to the golden period of Christianity.
We'll go down the Rue de la Peyrolerie toward the Place de l’Amirande, passing by the Palace of the Popes to visit the Basílica Saint-Pierre, famous for its carved walnut doors, and explore the surroundings of the synagogue, symbol of Avignon's cultural diversity.
The Église Saint Didier, a southern Gothic gem, and the Ceccano Palace, today Avignon's public library, will be the last two monuments we'll see before we reach the Rue de la République, where we'll say our goodbyes after 1 hour and 45 minutes.
