Spanish Civil War Free Walking Tour

  • 227 reviews | 1,854 travellers
It has been a great experience. David, our guide, has been able to explain the entire story very well, he is a person with a lot of knowledge and you will be impressed with everything he explains to you. It also allows you to ask questions during the tour and the members share very interesting stories about family members and acquaintances about things that happened to them during the civil war. It is very good to understand how and why of Spain and Barcelona.

Description

Starting from Plaça de Catalunya square, this free tour of the Civil War will take us to discover how the coup d'état of 1936 and its consequences were experienced in Barcelona, as well as how locals lived during the dictatorship that followed.

During the tour, we'll travel back to the 19th century to learn about the background of the Civil War. We'll talk about movements such as anarchism or anticlericalism and analyze how the Catalan bourgeoisie positioned itself before these ideologies.

You'll find out where, how, and why this war was fought and we'll remember how the people of Barcelona lived during this tragic period of Spanish history. As we walk through some of the city's most emblematic neighborhoods, we'll recreate the itinerary of the battle of Barcelona by touring the places where it was fought, from the first barricades to the last fight in the barracks of Atarazanas. We'll unveil stories heard in the neighborhoods and families firsthand, stories of everyday life that should not be forgotten. We'll also get to see multiple sites from George Orwell's book, "Homage to Catalonia".

After a total of 2.5 hours, during which we'll see iconic landmarks and learn about the realities of daily life in Barcelona between 1936 and 1939, we'll say goodbye at Sant Jaume Square.
