History

Checkpoint Charlie (which takes its name from the NATO alphabet) was set up following East Germany's erection of the Berlin Wall, which served to prevent its citizens from fleeing to the West. This checkpoint, which only served diplomats, military personnel and foreign tourists, would become a symbol of the Cold War.
