More information

Gendarmenmarkt is one of Berlin's most beautiful squares, famous for its harmonious blend of historic buildings, charming cafés, and vibrant atmosphere. Located in the heart of the city, it attracts both locals and visitors who come to admire the impressive architecture and enjoy cultural events in a relaxed, elegant setting.

History of the Square

Constructed at the end of the 17th century, this square has played a key role in Berlin’s history. Its most iconic landmarks—the Französischer Dom (French Cathedral), Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral), and the Konzerthaus—were built over the centuries, giving the square its unique character. Over time, it has survived wars and reconstructions, remaining a timeless symbol of the city’s resilience and spirit.

When to Visit

Gendarmenmarkt is enchanting at any time of year. In spring and summer, enjoy open-air cafés and lively street musicians. During winter, the famous Christmas market fills the square with festive lights and local treats, making it a magical spot for holiday visitors.

Is there an entry fee?

The square itself is open to the public and free to visit. Some concerts at the Konzerthaus or exhibitions inside the cathedrals may require tickets.

Gendarmenmarkt is centrally located and easily accessible by public transport. Take the U-Bahn (U2 or U6) to Stadtmitte station, just a short walk away.
