Fez Medina Guided Tour
Souks, Koranic schools, colourful gardens... On this guided tour of Fez, we'll discover the main attractions of the cultural capital of Morocco!
The Blue Gate, the leather tanneries, the Royal Palace, the madrasas (Koranic schools) such as Attarine, and Al Karaouine University, the oldest in the world still in operation.
Two days are enough to explore the Medina and the main monuments of Fez. However, we recommend staying for three or four days to enjoy unforgettable day trips to nearby places such as the Roman ruins of Volubilis or the blue city of Chefchaouen.
Without a doubt, the Chouara Tannery. It's the most iconic image of the city, where you'll see workers dyeing leather in large pools of color using traditional methods.
Absolutely. While Marrakech is more touristy and bustling, Fez retains a unique authenticity. Its medina is the largest pedestrian zone in the world, and getting lost in its narrow streets is one of the most fascinating experiences you can have in the Maghreb.
Yes, it's a safe city for tourists. However, the Medina can be overwhelming due to the persistence of some vendors. Simply say “No, thank you” firmly and continue on your way. Avoid very dark or deserted streets late at night.
The best months are April, May, October, and November. In summer, temperatures can exceed 40°C (104°F), making walking around the Medina exhausting, and in winter, nights can be quite cold.
Fez-Saïss Airport is about 15 km (9.3 mi) away. The easiest way to avoid getting lost in the narrow streets of the Medina when you arrive is to book a private transfer with Civitatis that will drop you off as close as possible to your riad.
As it's a very traditional city, we recommend dressing modestly. It's not mandatory, but it is respectful to cover your shoulders and knees, especially when visiting religious areas or less touristy neighborhoods.
In Morocco, non-Muslims are not allowed to enter mosques (with the exception of the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca). In Fez, you'll have to settle for viewing the spectacular courtyards from the open doors.
Don't leave without trying the chicken pastilla (an incredible blend of sweet and savory), the lamb tagine with prunes, and the Friday couscous. Of course, mint tea is a daily must!
