Matanuska River Rafting Tour
Day Trip Details
On the day of the activity, we’ll meet at 38100 Glenn Highway, where we’ll have an introduction before traveling by vehicle to the starting point. Ready to explore one of the most impressive riverbeds in southern Alaska?
Once equipped, we’ll get settled in the raft to begin a scenic descent along the glacial waters of the Matanuska River, whose course has been shaped by erosion processes from the glacier of the same name.
As we move forward, we’ll observe how the riverbed splits into multiple interwoven channels, a fluvial morphology typical of systems fed by glacial sediments.
We’ll notice the characteristic milky color of the water and, as we drift downstream, we’ll look at the alluvial terraces lining the river and the morainic deposits from past glacial advances. Around us, a mosaic of colors will unfold in forests of willows and alders, along with other species adapted to unstable soils and extreme drainage conditions.
Did you know that the Matanuska River can change course within days during the seasonal thaw? This geomorphological flexibility makes each descent a unique experience.
Finally, after completing this pleasant rafting trip, we’ll return by vehicle to the starting point, where we’ll say our goodbyes after a total of 2 hours.
