Once we meet at the entrance to Coffee Garden Britt, we’ll dive into the complex universe of Costa Rican coffee. We'll start by discussing this bean as the backbone of Costa Rica, the so-called golden bean. A fruit that, since the 19th century, has driven roads, railways, and a solid national identity.
We'll explore the Coffee Garden, where we'll walk among carefully shaded Arabica coffee trees. We'll observe the anatomy of the fruit, from the cherry to the pulp, mucilage, and parchment. We'll also learn how Heredia's altitude, volcanic soils, and microclimate define clean and balanced flavor profiles.
The tour will continue at the roasting facility, the true act of alchemy. We'll see how the green bean is transformed through precise thermal curves, exact times, and controlled cooling. We'll analyze concepts such as first crack, the development of the roast, and how each decision impacts the body, acidity, and final sweetness in the cup.
Next comes the professional tasting, an experience where we'll refine our sense of smell and taste. We'll compare aromas, body, and aftertaste. In this way, we'll learn the technical language used by certified tasters to describe an exceptional coffee.
Finally, this 1-hour and 20-minute tour concludes with a newfound appreciation for coffee.
