A major symbol of Istanbul, the 1,500-year-old Hagia Sophia is one of the most visited monuments in the city, due to its majestic architecture, beautiful art and rich history.

History

Built in the 6th century under Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, Hagia Sophia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has served as a Christian church, a mosque and a museum.

How to visit Hagia Sophia

You can see the Hagia Sophia from the outside as part of a walking tour of the city. Guides are not permitted within the mosque, though our Hagia Sophia skip-the-line tour provides an audioguide to use while inside!
