Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Lithuania on this kayak tour of the Curonian Spit from Klaipėda. Discover sand dunes, the Pervalka lighthouse and the picturesque village of Juodkrantė!
Curonian Spit Kayak Tour
After meeting at the Klaipėda Tourist Information Office at 10 am, we'll make our way to the Pervalka dock, where our kayaks will be waiting for us. The drive will take around an hour and fifteen minutes.
This area of Lithuania is known for its impressive sand dunes - so much so that they've been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Curonian Spit National Park, which encompasses the isthmus itself and the Curonian Lagoon, is home to large mountains of golden sand in an area known as the Nagliai Nature Reserve. It's hard to believe you're on the border with Russia admiring the desert-like landscapes!
We'll begin our activity with a brief instructional lesson on safely handling the kayaks, and then the adventure will begin! We'll paddle out to the Pervalka lighthouse, a 14-metre (46 feet) tall tower which has kept lookout over the lagoon since 1900.
Afterwards, we'll paddle alongside the banks of the Curonian Spit itself. Did you know that according to Lithuanian legend, this sand formation was created by a giant? We'll admire the towering sand dunes from the kayaks before climbing onto dry land for our lunch break: you can bring your own food or book the tour with a picnic included.
On our way back to the original departure pier, we'll stop at Juodkrantė, an old fishing village that stands out for its traditional Lithuanian houses. Not far from here, we'll make another stop to watch for the many species of bird that inhabit the area, like herons and cormorants. Arriving back at Pervalka dock, we'll leave our kayaks behind and make the return journey to Klaipėda, where you'll be dropped off around 6 pm.
