Bamboo Grove Tour and Zen Meditation
Our tour of the spiritual side of Japanese life begins in Arashiyama on the outskirts of Kyoto. We will stroll through the wonderful Bamboo Grove. Among the tall swaying stalks you will feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
In the middle of the Bamboo Grove, we will encounter the Nonomiya Shrine. This temple which was built in the 9th century was where princesses would traditionally spend a year of purification and preparation before becoming imperial priestesses. Now it is a place where people come to pray for a happier home life.
Then we pass through the beautiful Kameyama Park and alongside the picturesque Hozu river, passing traditional shops, restaurants, and historical sites. We make a stop on Togetsukyo Bridge, which means ‘Moon Crossing Bridge,’ to admire the gorgeous views. You will hear all about a curious method of fishing that takes place here in which the birds catch the fish for the fishermen.
We then continue to the ancient Daihikaku Senkoji Temple located on the side of a scenic mountain with breathtaking panoramic views across the valleys and Kyoto. Here you will have Zen meditation under the instruction of a real Buddhist monk. You will also experience a traditional Buddhist green tea ceremony.
After that wonderful zen experience, we will head back to Arashiyama where our tour ends.
