Traditional Maiko Show

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

Watching a Maiko show is one of the unmissable experiences for any trip to Kyoto. Immerse yourself in the culture of Japan and discover the way of life of the apprentices of a geisha.

What to expect at a Maiko show?

A traditional Maiko show is one of the best ways to discover the secrets of Japanese culture. You will enjoy an intimate show in which the geisha apprentices, dressed in bright colors, will perform wonderful dances and play musical instruments.

The Maiko are subjected to a long period of tough training from the age of 15 years old until they are in their twenties. Their aim is to develop full command of the elegant tea rituals, musical instruments, and dance routines which their profession demands. Once they have mastered all the rituals as a Maiko then they can officially be considered a Geisha.

After the show, you will have the opportunity of speaking to them, taking photos, and learning more about their lifestyle and daily routine. You will discover why this ancient profession is considered an art form.

Types of Ticket

When you book the Maiko show, there are three different types of tickets for you to choose from:

Handara

With this option, you'll be able to enjoy the traditional Maiko show whilst also savouring a traditional Japanese drink.

Ofuku

This is the most popular option, as while you enjoy the show, an expert guide will explain all about the Maiko culture. You'll learn about the history and art whilst also enjoying a tea with Japanese sweets, a personal photograph with a Maiko, and a Japanese style hand towel as a souvenir.

Wareshinobu

This is the most complete option, as not only will you be able to enjoy every included with the Ofuku option, but you'll also get a traditional picnic-style lunch and a typical drink. What more could you ask for?
