Immerse yourself in Tibet's culture, religion and history visiting some of the region's most sacred sites. Discover Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier and the Buddhist Monasteries of Palcho and Tashi Lhunpo on this two-day tour from Lhasa.
Gyantse & Shigatse: 2 Day Tour
After being picked up from your hotel first thing in the morning, you'll leave Lhasa behind and head south through the Tibetan mountains to Lake Yamdrok, one of the region's three largest sacred lakes along with Namtso and Lake Manasarovar. Located at 14,570 feet (4,441 metres) above sea level and surrounded by snow-capped mountains, it's easy to see how this natural wonder holds such spiritual value to the locals.
Delve deeper into the stunning Himalayan landscapes, continuing onwards to the historic town of Gyantse. Your journey will take you past the spectacular sprawling ice of the Karola Glacier, which contrasts strikingly with the almost-black mountains underneath it, and the piercing turquoise waters of the Manla Dam Lake. Crossing over the Simila Mountain Pass you'll be enchanted by the expanse of colourful flags fluttering in the wind. Do you know why they're here and what they're used for?
You'll then make a stop at Palcho, or Pelkor Chode Monastery, known for its impressive stupa, numerous beautiful temples and thousands of statues of Buddha. After exploring the religious complex, you'll be taken to your hotel in Shigatse to relax after an intensive day of sightseeing.
Today you'll visit another of Tibet's Buddhist places of worship: the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, located in Shigatse. This sacred place was founded in the mid-15th century by the first Dalai Lama, making it incredibly important historically and culturally. You'll have the opportunity here to admire the architecture and art, including the largest and best-conserved statue of Jampa, the Future Buddha.
Having enjoyed the peaceful, spiritual atmosphere in the temples of the monastery, it will be time to return to Lhasa following the course of the Yalong River.
This two-day tour includes one night's accommodation in a four star hotel in Shigatse.
