Janitzio Island Day Trip
Day Trip Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at the Plaza de Armas in Morelia and head to the Lake Pátzcuaro dock, where we'll board a boat to explore the many attractions this lake has to offer.
Over the course of 1 hour, we'll make our way to Janitzio Island, a natural volcanic elevation rising from the water. Along the way, we'll spot local fishermen using the famous butterfly nets. Keep your eyes on the lake's waters, which are teeming with charales, largemouth bass, tilapia, and carp.
Once we dock at Janitzio, we'll climb up to the statue of José María Morelos, a monument honoring one of the most celebrated figures of Mexican Independence. Look up and take it in: 47.75 meters of Art Deco sphinx rising into the sky.
We'll then board the boat again and continue on to the town of Pátzcuaro, which served as the capital of this province in 1534. Here we'll learn about Don Vasco de Quiroga, the first Bishop of Michoacán, who played a key role in supporting the development of the indigenous population.
In this picturesque Pueblo Mágico, we recommend trying the local cuisine: sopa tarasca, charales, corundas, and churipo are all worth seeking out.
After a stroll through its cobblestone streets, we'll make our way back to Morelia, where we'll say our goodbyes after a total of 8 hours of adventure.
