Museum of Cultures of Oaxaca Guided Tour
Activity Details
At the appointed time, we'll meet at the entrance of the Temple of Santo Domingo, in the heart of Oaxaca. Directly opposite is the Museum of Oaxacan Cultures, in the former convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán. Here we go!
We'll tour this historic building, an architectural jewel dating back to the 16th century, which was converted into a museum in 1993. The convent offers a unique vision of colonial architecture, with its imposing cloisters and ornamental details that will surprise you!
First, we'll start the tour exploring the rooms dedicated to the first cultures of Oaxaca, where we'll learn about the history of the Zapotecs and Mixtecs, two of the most important civilizations of Mesoamerica.
Next, we'll enter the rooms of the most significant archaeological treasures of the region to admire an incredible collection of pre-Hispanic pieces, such as the famous Treasure of Tomb 7 of Monte Alban. Here, gold, ceramics, and sculpted figures will tell us about the life, beliefs, and customs of these ancient cultures.
Our guided tour will continue in the rooms dedicated to the conquest, the colony, and the revolutionary Oaxaca. Here, we'll explore how the arrival of the Spaniards transformed the region, and how the social movements that marked the modern history of Oaxaca took shape. A real journey through time!
Finally, we'll arrive at the Historical Library, a space full of old books and documents that bear witness to the rich literary tradition of Oaxaca. And, if you're up for it, you can complete your visit with a stop at the traveling exhibition hall.
Finally, between 2 and 2.5 hours, we'll conclude our guided tour of the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca.
