Philadelphia Murals & Markets Walking Tour Itinerary
Meet your guide at the scheduled time on the corner of 9th and South Streets, ready to begin your walking tour of an alternative side of Philadelphia. You'll begin your route in the Bella Vista neighbourhood. This historic district was originally home to Italian and Irish immigrants as well as much of the city's black population, and to this day still boasts great cultural diversity.
Stroll along South Street, a lively street lined with shops, bars and restaurants and covered in colourful murals. Tempt your taste buds window shopping in the historic delis and delicious bakeries along the street, before ducking into the famous Italian Market.
As you explore the market, listen to fascinating stories about the early immigrants to the city and how this area's vibrant multiculturalism developed thanks to your expert guide. You'll feel like a true local perusing the different stalls and mixing with vendors. You'll also have the opportunity to enjoy a tasting of some local delicacies!
Continue your guided tour through Bella Vista, reaching Philadelphia's famous Magic Gardens. This colourful space includes indoor art galleries and outdoor installations, including a labyrinth. Created by mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar, the gardens are decorated with items - from ceramic plates to bike wheels - found all over the world in mosaics that stretch over 3000 square feet (280 square metres).
Finally, you'll visit Queen Village, located on the site of the city's earliest European settlements. Admire the picturesque colonial-style houses giving the historic neighbourhood its charming feel. At the end of your tour, you'll return to South Street.
