The Old Town Square of Prague (Staromestske Namesti, or just Staromak) is the heart and soul of the city. Apart from its sheer, breathtaking beauty, the square has been witness to a number of Prague's most important historical events.

History

The Old Town Square was founded as the central marketplace in Prague in the 12th century. Since then, it has been the site of medieval executions, political gatherings and conflicts. Today, it's surrounded by the famous Astronomical Clock, the Church of Our Lady Before Týn and much more!

How to see the Old Town Square

You can walk through the Old Town Square in Prague at your own leisure. However, we recommend seeing the square as part of a guided walking tour of the city, so that you'll gain a deeper insight into its history!

Markets in the Old Town Square

At Christmas and Easter, the square is host to markets reminiscent of the medieval markets which would have been held in it for hundreds of years. The Christmas market in particular is amongst the most highly rated in the world.
