    This may be a repeat review but it was excellent and I highly recommend. The guide was very knowledgeable and responsive and prompt. I probably paid more than I would have on a regular tour just because there was no set price and I paid him what I felt the quality of the tour was. He was generous with his time, so I was generous with my wallet. Please don’t stiff this gentleman as he has taken the time to invest in himself and his craft and deserves to be rewarded for the quality of the tour

Considered the largest urban forest in the world, the Tijuca National Park in Rio de Janeiro is one of the city's main tourist attractions. With an area of around 15 square miles (39.5 km²), the park is home to the iconic Christ the Redeemer.

Did you know...

In the 19th century, the Tijuca and Paineiras forests were declared Protective Forests by Emperor Pedro II, initiating a process of expropriation of coffee plantations and farms to promote reforestation and protect the city's water sources.

What to do in Tijuca National Park?

The Tijuca Park is divided into four main sectors that have their own attractions. They are

  • Tijuca Forest: with highlights including the Almas waterfall, Pico da Tijuca, which is the highest point in the park, and Bico do Papagaio, with impressive views of the city.
  • Serra da Carioca: home to Corcovado, Christ the Redeemer, Morro da Urca and Vista Chinesa, which offers views of Rio's southern zone.
  • Pedra Bonita and Pedra da Gávea: located on the west side, popular with those who enjoy extreme sports such as hang gliding and paragliding, as well as trails that lead to panoramic views of the Rio coastline.
  • Pretos Forros and Covanca sectors: the least popular part, with lush vegetation and lesser-known trails.
