Day Trip Details

After picking you up at your hotel in Salta at the designated time, we'll set off from the green plains of Salta along National Route 9 northwards. Let's get going!

During the approximately 2.5-hour drive to Purmamarca, we'll border the Rio Grande River and see the outlines of the villages of Volcán and Tumbaya in Jujuy. We'll reach the viewpoint of the Cerro de los Siete Colores, where we'll spend half an hour admiring this geological mural whose ochre, pink and green veins were born from lake sediments compressed millions of years ago.

Then, we'll head to the train station in Purmamarca. Ready for one of the most beautiful scenic trains in Salta? For approximately 1 hour, we'll travel from Purmamarca to Maimara. On this journey, you'll see landscapes and beautiful places of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. Once we reach the town of Maimara, you'll have some minutes of free time.

Afterward, we'll drive on the road to Purmamarca again, where we'll resume our journey, this time along National Route 52, ascending the Cuesta de Lipán for 1 hour and 15 minutes. We'll reach the highest point of the trip, at an altitude of 4,170 m (13,681 ft). There, we'll see one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Argentina: the Salinas Grandes, where the air seems to become crystalline and condors fly over the panorama.

You'll have about 45 minutes of free time in the salt flats to take pictures and marvel at the endless landscape. You'll observe the evaporation pools and discover how this fossil sea, millions of years old, got trapped in the Andean heights. It's really impressive!

Afterward, we'll drive back to Purmamarca, where you'll have 1 hour of free time for lunch. After revitalizing, we'll begin our journey back, which will take 2.5 hours. Finally, we'll say goodbye at your hotel in Salta after a 14.5-hour trip.
