Unfortunately we had a rainy day, but it is a highly recommended visit with wonderful views. The guide was very good, he tried to make the tour enjoyable with many stories, despite the weather. It is worth returning on a sunny day, the views are breathtaking.

Leave Salzburg city behind and embrace the peaceful beauty of the Austrian lake district on this tour of Salzkammergut: visit picturesque villages and enjoy a boat trip in the enchanting countryside.

Salzkammergut Lakes Tour Itinerary

After meeting in Mirabellplatz in the centre of Salzburg, you'll set off towards the southeast in the direction of the Austrian lake district, a region known as Salzkammergut. This stunning area, nestled in the Austrian Alps, is home to breathtakingly beautiful landscapes of verdant mountains, sparkling lakes and traditional villages. The perfect location for an escape from the city centre - you'll feel as though you're in a fairy tale!

Driving towards Fuschl am See, you'll arrive in Sankt Gilgen, a small village on the banks of Lake Wolfgang, where Mozart's mother was born. Here, you'll enjoy a boat cruise on the lake, during which you'll have incomparable panoramic views of the surrounding mountain scenery. You'll then enjoy a stroll around the hilly market town of St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut. Visit its church, home to a famous Gothic altar created by Austrian artist Michael Pacher, and admire the The White Horse Inn, a hotel famous for being the location of an operetta of the same name.

Back on the road, you'll make your way to the small town of Krottensee, where you'll visit its large lake before reaching the grand castle known as Schloss Hüttenstein. The last stop on your tour of Salzkammergut will be Mondsee, or the Moon Lake, where you'll have the opportunity to explore the famous St Michael's Basilica, where the wedding scene from The Sound of Music was filmed.

You'll return to Salzburg for approximately 6 pm.

Important information

Please note that the boat trip on Lake Wolfgang only operates between May and October. If you take this tour during the rest of the year, the cruise will be substituted with a tasting of typical local coffee and pastries.
