On this visit to the El Grifo winery, we'll explore one of the oldest wineries in the Canary Islands - discover the wonderous effects that volcanic soil can have on wine!

El Grifo Winery

Welcome to the oldest winery in the Canary Islands and one of the oldest in Spain! El Grifo Winery proudly makes the most of the land, which was once covered by volcanic lava and sand after the eruption between 1730 and 1736 on the island of Lanzarote, transforming it into an estate brimming with vineyards and fruit trees.

The winery's covered wine press dates back to 1775, and since then, the elements, combined with the expertise of the various families who have graced its premises, have given birth to wines with a renowned character and personality.

El Grifo Winery boasts vines from the 19th century that gracefully mature on the slopes and are hand-harvested one grape at a time. What's more, thanks to the rich history of the winery and the families who've overseen its operations, you can explore the museum that recounts the story of wine on the island.

Tour Details

To begin our journey, we’ll meet at the entrance of El Grifo Winery at the scheduled time. Once the group is assembled, we’ll start uncovering the secrets behind Lanzarote’s world-renowned volcanic wines. Our first stop will be the El Grifo Museum, where you'll be amazed to see the original indoor wine press from 1775. This space houses true treasures, including barrels of Volcanic Malvasía wine dating back to 1881—a real step back in time that’s sure to impress.

Next, we’ll visit the old winery, one of the oldest in the Canary Islands, where every glass of wine tells a story. You’ll discover how this historic winery has preserved its traditions for over two centuries, producing wines that are a true legacy of quality. It’s an experience that’s full of surprises!

We’ll then explore Lanzarote’s century-old vineyards, walking among the chabocos—deep hollows dug into volcanic ash and protected by stone walls. These unique structures, where vines were planted in the 19th century, shield the crops from the island’s harsh weather. We’ll also visit the old family home, the wine library, and the modern winery, where tradition meets innovation in perfect harmony.

Inside the family house, each room holds stories from generations devoted to the art of winemaking. The library, with over 5,000 volumes, offers a fascinating look at the history and uniqueness of island viticulture—unlike anything you’ve seen elsewhere. In the modern winery, you’ll see how cutting-edge technology is now part of the process, helping adapt to today’s winemaking demands.

Finally, among the vines, we’ll enjoy an exclusive tasting of six wines, paired with three traditional Canarian cheeses and a chocolate truffle. After this unforgettable tasting, we’ll say goodbye and bring our two-hour tour to a close.
