Historic monasteries and castles, beautiful natural landscapes and delicious wines... discover the delights of the Ribeira Sacra on this day trip from Santiago de Compostela.
Ribeira Sacra Day Trip
On the day of the excursion, we'll leave Santiago behind for the day and head towards the north of Orense province, where our guided tour through the Ribeira Sacra will begin. The name of this region, which means Sacred Riverbank, comes from the Middle Ages, when many monasteries were scattered across the slopes of these rugged landscapes.
Our first stop will be at Monforte de Lemos, known as the "Capital of the Ribeira Sacra", where we'll visit the spectacular Monastery of San Vicente del Pino, located on a hilltop at the highest point in the city. From this privileged viewpoint, we'll enjoy unparalleled views over the surrounding area.
Continuing onwards, we'll reach the Pena do Castelo viewpoint, the perfect place to take in the wild beauty of the Ribeira Sacra. We'll make our next stop at a local winery to discover the great winemaking tradition of this area, and what better way to do so than to indulge in a tasting of a regional wine?
We'll then continue on our route to the town of Castro Caldelas, where you'll have free time to eat lunch (not included) and to take photos of the imposing Condes de Lemos Castle, one of the most important Medieval fortresses in the area. In the afternoon, after eating, we'll head to another viewpoint at Cabezoás for magnificent views over the Sil Canyon, one of the area's main natural attractions.
About twenty minutes from here, we'll find the Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil Monastery. This historic monastery, currently acting as a "parador" or hotel, has retained its charm and exquisite architecture.
At around 8 pm, we'll return to Santiago de Compostela.
