Discover the Greek Pompeii with this Akrotiri Guided Tour. Step back in time to the village engulfed by volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago.
Akrotiri Guided Tour
The guide will pick you up from the different meeting points and head to the Akrotiri archaeological excavations (entry not included).
The archaeological site shares a similar history to that of the Roman city of Pompeii. Both were modern areas which were buried by volcanic lava after powerful eruptions. The remnants of Akrotiri were discovered at the end of the 19th century but its origin goes much back than Pompeii, up to nearly 3000 years.
We'll visit the main points around the location to learn more about the origins of this population which inhabited the island of Santorini, home to the ancient Minoans.
During the tour, you'll see the two and three-storey houses people lived in with underfloor heating and hot running water, as well as the sanctuaries, offering tables, ceramic vases and many more.
Surprisingly, one thing that hasn't been found in the excavations are the remains of the inhabitants, who would have been engulfed under the lava too. There are several theories surrounding this, including that they are actually at the bottom of the seabed.
The Akrotiri guided tour will end back at the meeting points.
The main meeting point is the Eparheio of Fira Building. However, upon booking, we'll indicate the closest meeting point to your hotel in Santorini.
