Setúbal Free Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at the Setúbal Railway Station and, once we're all gathered, we'll kick off this free tour. Are you ready to discover the essence of this city through its history? Let's go!
First, we'll provide an introduction to the origins of Setúbal, from the Roman period to its golden age in the 18th century. Of course, we'll discover Setúbal's connection with the Sado River and the Tróia Peninsula. We'll then head to the Avenida Luísa Todi, the green lung of the city, which is named after the opera singer Luísa Todi, who was born in Setúbal.
Afterward, we'll see one of the prettiest markets in Portugal: the Mercado do Livramento. Decorated with tiles that depict maritime stories, this is the perfect place to discuss the city's typical cuisine, especially two of its most symbolic dishes: choco frito and caldeirada de pescado.
We'll continue discovering the charms of the city by exploring its old town. We'll stop at the main square, dedicated to the poet Manuel Bocage, an important figure in Setúbal. We'll share anecdotes of his life and see some historic buildings, like the City Hall.
You'll also admire the Monastery of Jesus, a Manueline-style gem built in the 15th century. Designed by the architect Diogo Boitaca, this monastery is one of the country's most important religious masterpieces.
To wrap up the tour on a high note, we'll climb up to the Mirador de São Sebastião, where you'll enjoy the stunning scenic view of the Setúbal Bay. Don't forget to take a picture!
Finally, after 2.5 hours, we'll say our goodbyes at the Praça do Bocage.
