Swahili Cooking Class in Zanzibar
Activity Details
If you're someone who likes to experience the local culture through your sense of taste, this Swahili cooking class in Zanzibar is the ideal experience for you. Shall we get started? At the indicated time, we'll pick you up from your hotel and drive to a spice plantation—the best way to start!
Upon arrival at the plantation, we'll tour the different crops that are cultivated daily to produce some of the most popular spices used in the island's gastronomy, and all over the world! During the tour, we'll see how spices such as cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and cardamom are grown—the smell of them will make your mouth water!
After learning about the history and cultural significance of spices in Zanzibar, we'll head to the place where we'll have our Swahili cooking class. We'll be sure to use many of these ingredients! When we arrive at the school, we'll reveal the secrets of the recipes we are about to prepare.
We'll get down to work, accompanied at all times by cooks specialised in Swahili gastronomy. While we handle and familiarise ourselves with the ingredients, we'll learn the techniques used in Zanzibar. During the class, we'll prepare the following dishes:
- Pilau: rice with aromatic spices
- Samaki wa Kupaka: roasted spicy marinated fish
- Mshikaki: meat or fish skewers with spicy sauce
- Kachumbari: tomato and onion salad
Once everything is ready, we'll sit down at the table and enjoy our creations—the long-awaited moment!
After this unforgettable experience, we'll bring you back to your hotel, and we'll say our goodbyes after a total of 5 hours.
