Almería Free Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at the Plaza de la Catedral, right in front of Almería's unique fortress-like cathedral, built in the 16th century with towers, battlements, and thick walls designed to fend off Berber pirate attacks. From here, we'll set off on a walking tour to discover the city's most iconic landmarks.
We'll start by visiting the nearby Convent of the Purísima Concepción before strolling past the Poet's House, a museum dedicated to writer José Ángel Valente, and the charming Plaza Campoamor, known for its gorgeous bougainvillea trees.
From there, we'll head along Calle de la Reina, one of the oldest streets in the city, and continue down Calle Descanso, where the narrow, winding lanes still carry the essence of Almería's Arab past. We'll reach the gateway to the Alcazaba and walk along Calle Almanzor, named after the legendary Muslim leader, taking in the impressive fortress that dates back to the 10th century and is the largest building built by the Muslims in Spain.
Heading back into the center, we'll pass through the Plaza Vieja, home to Almería's City Hall, before visiting the Convent of the Poor Clares. We'll then stop at the lively Plaza de las Flores, where we'll find the John Lennon statue, a curious tribute to the musician's time in the city.
Next, we'll visit the Church of Santiago, known for its beautiful Plateresque facade and striking 50-meter-tall (164-foot) tower, before exploring the Spanish Civil War shelters, where we'll learn about one of the most striking chapters of the city's recent history.
Finally, we'll wrap up this 1.5 to 2-hour tour at Puerta de Purchena, one of Almería's main hubs, after exploring the city's history, culture, and most emblematic spots.
