A pre-Roman acropolis, thick ancient walls and a mysterious fresco make up the historic center of Alatri. On this guided tour, you'll discover all the secrets and curiosities of this village in the unknown lands of Ciociaria.
Alatri Guided Tour
At 11:30 am, we'll meet at the Porta San Francesco, one of the old city gates in the walls of Alatri. From here, we'll begin a walking tour to learn about the history and the main monuments of this Italian village.
We'll start by talking about the origins of this town, dating back almost 4,000 years, and explain why these territories of the Lazio region and its surroundings are known as Ciociaria. Here's a clue: the answer lies in the rural past and the footwear that was once worn in the villages of the area.
After a brief historical introduction, we'll visit the 13th-century Church of San Francesco. In the adjoining convent, we'll find a painting known as the Christ in the Labyrinth, a unique fresco of Jesus Christ depicted in the center of a labyrinth. Could it have something to do with the Templars? We'll find out on the tour!
We'll continue our guided tour admiring other emblematic sites and buildings such as the Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore or the Cathedral of San Paolo, built upon the acropolis of Alatri. The temple is located at the highest point of the village, protected by walls originating from the 7th century B.C. Here, we'll enjoy amazing panoramic views of the village - the perfect spot to snap some photos!
After getting your fill of postcard images, we'll return to the starting point, concluding the tour at 1:30 pm.
