On this guided tour of Anagni, discover the main monuments of the Italian town famous for housing the so-called 'Sistine Chapel of the Middle Ages.' The City of the Popes awaits!
Anagni Guided Tour
At 10 am on the morning of the tour, we'll meet at Porta Santa María, one of the ancient city gates to the fortified town of Anagni. From here, we'll embark on a walking tour to discover the most important monuments of this Italian town.
Did you know that Anagni is known as the City of the Popes? Innocent III, Alexander IV, Gregory IX and Boniface VIII were all born in this Lazio region town. During the tour, we'll tell you all about the disputes of the Catholic Church and the power struggles that arose during the different eras of these bishops of Rome.
Our walk through the city will take us to the Anagni Cathedral, dubbed the 'Sistine Chapel of the Middle Ages.' Aside from its 30-meter-high tower, you'll be struck by the contrast of the temple's simple Romanesque façade with its Gothic-Lombard interior. Inside the cathedral, we'll visit the Diocesan Museum and the crypt of San Magno, a place that once housed relics of the saints.
After this visit, we'll head to Palazzo Bonifacio VIII, also known as the Palace of the Popes. Walking through its different rooms, we'll discover beautiful frescoes and mosaics. Afterward, we'll continue walking through the historic center of this town and admire other emblematic buildings like the Town Hall or the exterior of the noble Casa Barnekow. You won't be able to stop taking pictures!
At 1 pm, we'll return to the starting point, concluding the tour.
