Want to learn the true story of St. Thomas Aquinas & visit one of the most important archaeological sites in the Ciociaria region? Don't miss this guided tour of Aquino!
Aquino Guided Tour
At 3:30 pm, we'll meet in front of the Church of Santa Maria della Libera in the historic center of Aquino. To start off this guided tour, we'll explore the interior of this 11th-century Romanesque temple.
After visiting the church, we'll head to the Arch of Marcantonio, a triumphal monument dating back to the 1st century B.C. We'll continue walking until we reach the archaeological area, where the ruins of the theater of Aquino are located.
Then, to continue exploring the past of the Roman Empire, we'll admire the Porta di San Lorenzo, one of the ancient entrances in the fortified city walls. Nearby lies the Archaeological Museum of Aquino, where we'll discover pieces from Prehistory, the pre-Roman and Roman period as well as the medieval era.
The tour will also take us to the outside of the Aquino Cathedral, where we'll learn exactly who St. Thomas Aquinas was. Did you know that he was not actually born in this city but in a village called Roccasecca? We'll tell you about his curious biography and turbulent conflicts with his father, the Count of Aquinas - an exciting story!
We'll conclude the guided tour of Aquino at 6 pm at the starting point.
