Avranches Guided Tour
Learn about the history of the Norman town of Avranches, also known as the city of books, and discover its literary links to the nearby Mont-Saint-Michel, when you take this fantastic guided tour.
Avranches Guided Tour
We will meet up at the scheduled time on rue du Général de Gaulle street in Avranches. Our fantastic tour begins by finding out why this Normandy town is known as "the city of books" as we discover its literary connections.
One of the most picturesque characters in the village is Hugo of Avranches, also known as "Hugo the wolf". This 11th-century count, who became an advisor to none other than William the Conqueror, has a curious relationship with the animals from who he earned his nickname.
After revealing the history of this character, we will continue the tour next to the remains of the old castle of Avranches, which will give us a better understanding of the city's medieval past. The next stop is at the Saint-Gervais basilica, where a hidden treasure awaits us!
Following the route through the old town, we will tell you why the barefoot revolt took place, a movement against King Louis XIII that broke out in Avranches and all of Normandy in 1639. The main instigator of the rebellion was a squire called Jean Quétil, a character we will also tell you about during the tour.
Finally, after a fantastic two-hour tour, we will conclude in the gardens of Avranches, which offer magnificent views of the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. Very close to the gardens is the Scriptorial: a museum where, if you want, you can visit the permanent exhibition which displays some of the most important manuscripts of Mont-Saint-Michel.
