World War II Tour of Avranches

The Normandy Landing, Operation Cobra, and other famous acts of World War II are all closely linked to Avranches. Discover this fascinating history when you take this fantastic tour.

World War II Tour of Avranches

Tuesday 6th June 1944. D-Day. Allied troops land on the beaches of Normandy and in one of history's most decisive moments. This military operation, which would change the course of World War II, took place just a few miles from Avranches. At the scheduled time, we will meet on rue du Général de Gaulle to find out what role this Normandy town played in the world's biggest conflict.

The Normandy Landing was intended to quickly surprise the Nazi troops. However, the maneuver was not as easy as expected. The following day, Wednesday 7th June 1944, a squadron of the Allies bombed Avranches. During the tour, we will see the remaining vestiges of this air offensive on the city.

As the Battle of Normandy became increasingly bogged down at the beginning of that summer in 1944, on 25 July, seven weeks after D-Day, US Lieutenant General Omar Bradley launched a new offensive known by the code name of Operation Cobra. This plan would not be understood without the so-called advance or percée d'Avranches, the main episodes of which we will tell you about during the tour.

Between 31 July and 10 August, US General George Patton leads the liberation of Avranches. We will remember this historic event in Place Patton, a picturesque esplanade that, symbolically, is part of the territory of the United States. In this same square, we will see a WWII battle tank and a monolith that reminds us of Patton's deeds. During the walk through the town, we will also stop in front of other commemorative monuments that pay tribute to the victims of the two world wars.

Finally, we will conclude this two-hour tour of Avranches in the old town.
