The Roman Theater of Cartagena is one of the most important archaeological sites in Spain. Although it was built in the 1st century BC, it wasn’t uncovered until 1988, when its first structures came to light during construction work in the area. Since then, it has become one of the city’s main tourist attractions.

Built under the rule of Emperor Augustus, this theater had a capacity of around 6,000 spectators, who would attend to watch dramatic performances, musical shows, and as part of cultural festivals. Its design follows the classic Roman style and reflects the importance of Cartagena, or Carthago Nova, as a key city of the Empire.

The visit usually begins at the Roman Theater Museum, where artifacts from the excavations are displayed and the site’s historical context is explained. From there, you enter the ruins themselves to admire the seating, stage, and part of the original portico. You can also enjoy views of the old Cathedral of Santa María la Mayor.
