Sites Included

With your ticket to the Château de Loches, you can visit The Keep, the Royal Lodge, and a medieval-inspired garden.

The Keep

The Donjon or The Keep is a masterpiece of 11th-century military architecture. It was built by Foulques Nerra around the year 100.

Standing at 121 feet (37 meters) tall, this is one of the most stunning Romanesque towers and one of the best-preserved towers in Europe. This defensive and residential building suffered various sieges during the territory struggles between the Capetian dynasty and the House of Plantagenet between the 12th and 13th centuries. It began being a count's castle, then it became a royal fortress, and eventually served as a state prison until 1926.

Your ticket includes access to the tower with a Histopad, a tablet with information in English and immersive 3D and 360° reconstructions to discover how this site's exterior and interior was in the past.

The Royal Lodge

The Royal Lodge, the former residence of the monarchy, is an architectural gem from the late Middle Ages, showcasing predominantly Gothic and Flamboyant Gothic styles.

Its chambers were highly valued by the Valois dynasty. This site has also witnessed significant historical events, such as the meeting between Joan of Arc and the future King Charles VII. Later, Queen Anne of Brittany expanded the residence and lived in Loches regularly for nearly 20 years.

The Medieval Garden

The Gonzague Saint-Bris space is a medieval-inspired garden representing a true haven of peace in the heart of the citadel. This 7,534-square-foot (700-square-meter) garden built in 1998 houses a pergola, benches, and hedges that invite visitors to daydream. In 2018, it was renamed in honor of the novelist Gonzague Saint Bris.
