Day Trip to Malinalco
Description
At the indicated time, we'll leave from Calle Florencia, 70 on the corner of Calle Liverpool. From there, we'll head toward the south of Mexico City and start our excursion.
We'll drive through the lush vegetation that surrounds the town, before arriving at our destination after a 2-hour drive. Here, we'll stop to explore Cuautinchán, one of the most famous archaeological sites in the region, located on the hill known as Cerro de los Idolos.
To access the site, we'll have to climb 420 steps, but don't worry - it'll be worth the effort! At the top, we'll be able to explore the world-famous temple of the Eagle Warriors, also known as Cuauhtinchan. Incredibly, this monolithic temple consisting of various chambers, was dug out of living rock and was home to the local warriors.
After that climb, we'll have worked up an appetite, so we'll leave you some free time to have some lunch.
The next stop will be the Doctor Luis Mario Schneider University Museum. Here we'll discover a great variety of pre-Hispanic artefacts and also learn about the indigenous people's use of medicinal plants. Among all the plants they used, the most sacred was undoubtedly the malinalli.
Our next stop can be found just a stone's throw from the museum: the Augustine Convent of Malinalco, which dates back to 1543. At the convent, there is plenty of art to enjoy from the 16th century, which was painted by local indigenous people.
You'll then have some free time to enjoy the area and grab a snack if you so wish!
We'll then head back to Mexico City, and we'll arrive back at the starting point after a total of 13 hours.
