Coyoacán, Xochimilco and the Frida Kahlo Museum
Discover the most picturesque corners of Mexico City, on this tour visiting the bohemian neighbourhood of Cotoacán and passing through the Xochimilco canals on board a traditional trajinera.
Coyoacán & Xochimilco Tour
We'll meet at the selected meeting point, then head south of Mexico City to Coyoacán, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the capital. This area is famous as the home of historic figures including Leon Trotsky, Octavio Paz, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.
Before arriving at this area of the city, we'll make a stop in case you want to buy some breakfast. We'll take advantage of this break to explain how silver is made in Mexico.
Then the tour will arrive at Coyoacán, where we'll learn all about its thousand-year history, from the settlement of the first communities in the high plains of Mesoamerica to its establishment as the seat of power following the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors.
Strolling through cobbled streets and picturesque squares, we'll enjoy the impressive 16th-century baroque mansions typical of the area. Then we head to the Universidad Autónoma de México, to admire the majestic architecture of the largest university in Latin America.
We'll also visit the Frida Kahlo Museum, located in the famous Casa Azul in Coyoacán. We'll delve into the intimate universe of the Mexican artist visiting the house where she was born, where she did much of her work and where she died. Afterwards, we'll take a break at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and you will have time for lunch on your own.
The tour will then continue onwards to Xochimilco where we'll discover its spectacular combination of natural and cultural heritage. Here we'll climb on board a trajinera (a small traditional boat adorned with flowers) to pass through the network of canals and artificial islands which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At the end of the tour, you'll be dropped back off at the original meeting points in Mexico City.
Budget-friendly tour option
If you'd prefer, you can book a cheaper tour option. The budget tour includes pickup from the different meeting points in Mexico City, before visiting Coyoacán and following the same itinerary as above, but without visiting the Frida Kahlo Museum. Then, after a break so that you can get lunch in Coyoacán, we'll go to Xochimilco to admire its landscapes and enjoy a ride in a trajinera.
Finally, we'll make a brief stop at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and learn about its murals before returning to the meeting point in Mexico City.
