The marine mammals in the Azores Islands stand out because of their exceptional size. On Pico Island, you can enjoy a whale watching experience alongside its green coastland.
From your hotel in Pico, we will head to the south of the island until reaching Lajes do Pico, a village with an extensive whaling tradition.
Once at the marine town, we will go on a walking tour of Lajes do Pico. On this trip, we'll discover the charming historical centre, full of influences and links to the fishing industry. To better understand what this activity means for the local economy, we'll visit the Whaling Industry Museum. Its permanent exposition houses different model boats and fishing instruments and utensils that have been used on these islands throughout history.
We will complete our knowledge of the marine mammals of the Azores Islands by taking a boat trip along the southern coast of Pico Island. Sailing from the port of Lajes do Pico, during an approximately three-hour-long journey we will spot whales, dolphins and other marine mammals that live in this area of the Atlantic. This is the perfect opportunity to go whale watching and see the true kings of the ocean!
The boat trip will come to an end by anchoring down in the Lajes do Pico bay. In this town, we'll replenish our energy with a typical buffet lunch with up to six different dishes. After eating we'll continue our trip up to Vigia da Queimada: a strategic observation point where we can spot the marine animals swimming close to the coast.
Then we'll take you back to your hotel on the island.
Animals are unpredictable. Whales, orcas, dolphins and other kinds of marine mammals inhabit the waters of the Azores Islands all year round. However, the amount to which they can be seen throughout our trip depends on various factors such as the marine currents, the direction of the wind or the weather conditions at the time.
