Mitad del Mundo Excursion
After picking you up at your hotel in Quito at the appointed time, we'll head north to Mitad del Mundo, or 'Middle of the World,' famous for housing the monument that marks the exact location of the equator, from which the country takes its name.
In the middle of an impressive natural landscape, the Equatorial Monument stands at latitude 0º0'0". Thanks to its pyramidal-quadrangular shape with four monoliths located on its corners, this obelisk marks the geographical orientation of the four cardinal points.
From the Equatorial Monument begins a line painted on the ground representing the imaginary line that divides the terrestrial hemispheres. With one foot on each side of this line, you can simultaneously be in the northern and southern hemispheres - smack dab in the middle of the world!
During the trip, you'll have free time to enter the museum, where you can check out the experiments that prove that this place is indeed the Middle of the World. You can also enjoy the planetarium, visit the various pavilions in the area and access the ancestral dwellings.
The excursion ends with the return to the starting point in Quito.
