Ravenna Guided Tour
We will meet up at 10:30 before we head into Ravenna, a city rich in the cultural and artistic heritage of the different civilizations which have inhabited it - the Romans, the Ostrogoths, and the Byzantines.
We will stroll through the narrow streets of what was once the capital of the Roman Empire until we reach the Piazza del Popolo square. There you will have time to admire all the beautiful buildings that surround it and learn about the history, art, and culture of this location.
Our tour then focuses on the places of Ravenna which have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. We will visit the Archiepiscopal Museum, which has both national and international renown for the antiquities and rooms it houses, and collections. Inside, you will also discover the mosaic masterwork of the chapel of Sant'Andrea, and the Throne of Archbishop Maximianus of Ravenna.
Our next stop is the Baptistery of Neon, one of the oldest monument in Ravenna which has preserved its original structure and interior decoration just as it was many centuries ago. After stopping to admire the stunning dome, we will walk to the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo to learn about the history of emperor Theodoric the Great.
We will also enter the Basilica of San Vitale which is popular for the mosaics which cover its interior. You will also see the combined work of western and eastern artists in the murals. This a genuine treat for any lover of art.
Our last stop will be the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, constructed in the 5th century. The contrast between the simplicity of its exterior and the luxury of the interior, and the mosaics of the barrel vault, make this building one of the most important in Ravenna.
We'll finish our visit at around 1 pm.
