One of the most famous structures in the world and a symbol of the city, Christ the Redeemer towers over Rio de Janeiro.

History

Though the reinforced concrete colossal statue wouldn't be completed until 1931, the idea of building a Christian monument in this area goes back to 1850. Today, Christ the Redeemer is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

The 30 metre (98 ft) structure is the largest Art Deco-style sculpture in the world and has become a symbol of Rio de Janeiro. The viewing platform at Christ the Redeemer also offers unparalleled views of Guanabara Bay and Rio.

You can easily visit Christ the Redeemer via public transport. However, the best way to visit is by booking a guided tour which includes transport and a guide. Alternatively, you can see the statue as part of a boat trip.
