Bund Neighborhood Evening Tour
Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet in front of the east facade of Holy Trinity Church, the oldest Protestant church in Shanghai. Here we'll begin our evening tour of the Bund neighborhood, discussing the foreign influence that took hold of the city after the Treaty of Nanking.
Our route continues by admiring the imposing Custom House. Its clock tower, inspired by London's Big Ben, has become a symbol of the customs system that boosted Shanghai's commercial development.
A few steps away, we'll find the Shanghai Steam Navigation Company building, which played a key role in river trade in the 19th century. Opposite, stands the majestic HSBC building, which for years was the pride of foreign banking in Asia. Crossing the avenue, we'll stop in front of the Bank of China, whose architecture reflects the country's economic growth during the 1930s. A true gem of Chinese financial history!
The tour will also take us to the legendary Fairmont Peace Hotel, a showcase of Art Deco opulence that still dazzles today. Here we'll learn about the story of Victor Sassoon, the businessman who marked a turning point in the transformation of Shanghai.
We'll continue walking to the Jardine Matheson building, one of the first foreign trading offices established in the city. Then we'll arrive at the Yokohama Specie Bank, which will show us how the local economy changed during the Japanese occupation.
Finally, we'll reach the panoramic platform of the Bund. From this point, we'll observe the fusion between colonial architecture and the skyscrapers of the modern Pudong financial district. An image you will never forget!
After an hour's drive, we'll bring the tour to an end at this final point.
