    Tourguide Sophie did it great! She speaks perfect english without a strong dialect so we could understand all of the information. The tour was about 2 hours and it wasn‘t boring. We saw some new places and get informations about the history and details of places, houses which we already saw. We loved the tour and if we come back to Stockholm anytime we would book another tour with Sophie. Definetely worth it.

Stortorget is the oldest and most iconic square in the Swedish capital. Located in the heart of the Gamla Stan district in the old town, the square is considered as one of the most beautiful places to see in Stockholm.

History

The square of Stortorget was the beating heart of Stockholm during the Middle Ages, with the city's urban layout developing around it. Today, it's framed by beautiful, colorful buildings and is home to the Nobel Museum. It also hosts one of Stockholm’s most charming Christmas markets each year, making it a lively and historic focal point of the city.

Did you know...

One of the most striking features of Stortorget is that some of its houses were built without windows to avoid taxes. Today, we can see some 'false windows' painted as frescoes.

What to see near Stortorget?

A few steps from the square, is the St. Nicholas Cathedral, famous for the statue of St. George and the Dragon. Also worth a visit is the nearby Royal Palace, one of the largest official residences in the world. As an added bonus, a musical changing of the guard is organized outside this monument.
