Discover Les Baux, Arlés, Saint-Rémy and Châteauneuf du Pape and the lives of its famous painters on this Provence Art History Tour, including a wine tasting in two local wineries!
Provence Art History Tour
We'll depart from the Cours Jean Jaurès in Avignon at 9 am and just 30 minutes later arrive in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Did you know that Van Gogh painted his famous work of art 'The Starry Night' in his sanatorium? We'll discover it by visiting the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery, where the artist stayed between 1889 and 1890.
From there we'll head to Les Baux-de-Provence, and make a brief stop so that you can photograph this picturesque Provencal village. On the outskirts of the town is the Carrières de Lumières: a complex of old stone quarries converted into a digital arts centre. Here you'll see an audiovisual show about Salvador Dalí.
The tour will continue to Arles, a beautiful town on the banks of the Rhone river, where we'll take a guided tour of its old town. We'll spend 45 minutes wandering around past the famous Roman amphitheatre and the Café Van Gogh. If you take the tour on a Saturday, we'll visit the weekly market in the city. At the end of the guided tour, you'll have one hour of free time to have lunch on your own.
In the afternoon we'll visit two wineries in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and taste some local wines. Their wines are known to be excellent!
We'll conclude the tour by returning to Avignon arriving at the Cours Jean Jaurès at 6:30 pm.
