Are you landing at Cancun Airport and hoping to visit Chichen Itza? Travelling on the Maya Train is the most comfortable and fastest way to travel to this wonder of the world, a journey that will allow you to enjoy the landscapes of the Riviera Maya!

Maya Train

The Maya Train connects five states in southeast Mexico: Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo. With this ticket, you can travel from the Cancún International Airport to one of the most important places in Riviera Maya, like Chichén Itzá, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, or Mérida.

During the booking process, you can select the route that you're most interested in to travel from Cancún. This modern railway crosses the Yucatán Peninsula, offering a comfortable journey as you reach some of the wonders of the world.

Once you reach your destination, you can enjoy Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Chichén Itzá, or Mérida for all the time you want.

Maya Train Schedule

  • The one-way train departs from the Cancún Airport at 9 am, 11:50 am, and 3:20 pm.

The trips in the Maya Train from Cancún to the different destinations have the following durations:

  • Playa del Carmen: 49 minutes
  • Tulum: 1 hour and 43 minutes
  • Chichén Itzá: 1 hour and 59 minutes
  • Mérida: 3 hour and 39 minutes

What to See at Chichen Itza?

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, in the heart of Chichén Itzá stands the Temple of Kukulcan, also known as El Castillo, a 30-metre-high (98 ft) structure that reflects the advanced architectural and astronomical knowledge of the Maya. Did you know that its design is based on the solar calendar?

A few steps away, you'll find The Ball Game, the largest in Mesoamerica. Its dimensions will impress you, but the most surprising thing is its acoustics: a whisper at one end of the court can be heard clearly at the other!

Don't miss the Temple of the Warriors, a majestic group of columns sculpted with figures of Toltec warriors, or the Thousand Columns Group. Want to discover more about the advanced knowledge of the Maya? Then, the El Caracol Observatory will enchant you. Its circular structure and its openings are perfectly aligned with the stars, demonstrating the impressive precision with which this civilisation studied the sky.

You can also visit the Sacred Cenote, a natural well 60 metres (196 ft) in diameter that played a crucial role in the ritual life of the Mayas. Here, offerings were made to the gods, and objects of jade, gold, and even human remains have been found in its depths, confirming its importance in Mayan culture.

To make the most of your visit, we recommend booking your ticket to Chichen Itza in advance, as well as a guided tour of Chichen Itza or a private tour if you'd prefer to discover the site with a guide just for you.

What to See at Tulum?

White sand beaches, turquoise waters, and a setting that captivates everyone who visits. Tulum, in Riviera Maya, is the ideal place to enjoy nature, see ancient Mayan ruins, and relax under the sun.

In Tulum, you can visit one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mexican Caribbean. By booking this guided tour of Tulum, you'll discover the rise and fall of this ancient walled city, whose temples were built between the years 1200 and 1450.

To complete your stay at Tulum, you can enjoy a day trip to Laguna de Kaan Luum and Mayan cenotes, a day trip to Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres, or practice snorkeling in Tulum

What to See in Playa del Carmen?

Considered one of the most famous destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, Playa del Carmen has paradisiac beaches with white sand and turquoise waters. Plus, its proximity to the archaeological site of Chichén Itza makes it the perfect place for a day trip to one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

You can make the most of your visit by heading to a theme park like Xcaret or the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.

What to See at Mérida?

If you travel to Mérida with the Maya Train, you'll visit a site full of history, culture, and Colonial charm in the heart of the Yucatán Peninsula. You can stroll along its streets and admire its colorful facades while discovering its Prehispanic legacy and its Colonial Spanish heritage. Don't miss the local cuisine!

This free tour of Mérida or this food tour are two of the best plans to enjoy in Mérida.
